The University of Piura, Peru successfully held its regional symposium

On October 24 and 25, 2022, it took place at the Piura Campus of the UDEP the regional symposium “Conservation and management of documentary heritage: good practices and current possibilities”, within the framework of the Codicis Erasmus + project, a bibliographic project of the European Union that brings together six Latin American universities and seeks to strengthen conservation and management capacities of archives in heritage libraries. The event was developed in hybrid mode and was organized by the Central Library, the Faculty of Humanities and the Directorate of International Relations of the UDEP, in order to emphasize the importance of the preservation, management and dissemination of documentary heritage, to through the presentation of activities carried out in archives and libraries in Peru and the world.

A contribution of visibility to institutions

Professor Cristina Vargas Pacheco, director of the International Relations Department at UDEP, indicated that the objective of the project is to allow archival and library institutions to continue strengthening their learning and practices in the preservation and administration of documentary collections. For his part, Pablo Cruz Quintanilla, Peruvian art historian and one of the exhibitors, highlights the importance of protecting and disseminating documentary heritage to strengthen collective memory and provide greater visibility to organizations.

Likewise, it points out that the general public, researchers, intellectuals and scientists constantly seek access to written or visual sources protected by public or private institutions, and that the effort of entities to achieve this accessibility is possible through their management capacity and entrepreneurship. of potential projects.

On the other hand, Luis Fernando Brugué Valcárcel, director of the Luis E. Valcárcel Center & Archive, provided details about his photographic collection which, thanks to his intellectual contacts and the diversity of positions he held, allowed him to provide material for the institutions he directed, in addition to providing historians, archaeologists and scholars with precious visual material for their publications.

CODICIS Goals

CODICIS plans to extend until 2024 and hopes to meet its following goals: implement conservation and restoration laboratories in the project centers, train future trainers from each of the Latin American partner institutions, transfer knowledge in the regions where the project is carried out and strengthen international university cooperation in relation to heritage archiving, as well as the participation of other types of entities at the local level.
